What is found in Non-Organic Mattresses?

By: David

After working the whole day, all that we really want to do is go to bed and sleep. We have all been told the importance of buying a good mattress. So we spend a fortune on buying an expensive mattress to allow us to have great night's sleep. That is all fine until we find out exactly what it is we are sleeping on.

The National Mattress Law actually requires that potentially toxic chemicals be added to our mattresses. To make things worse, mattress manufacturers are not required to label them. After finding out some of the things used to make non-organic mattresses, we are now considering switching to an organic mattress.

One of the main items used in non-organic mattresses is boric acid. It is especially used in baby's mattresses and had been known to cause nausea, vomiting, coma and even death. The problem with boric acid is that it can easily be absorbed through damaged skin or via inhalation. Subjecting a baby to such a toxin over prolonged periods has even been known to result in kidney failure. A better option would be to use an organic mattress.

Most non-organic mattresses may have polyester, polyurethane and synthetic latex all derived from petrochemicals. We may wish to trust that such chemicals have been rendered safe before sleeping on them but we would not trust any petrochemical company. Think about it, your baby would be spending more than half its life sleeping on petrochemicals. The so called natural fabrics in the mattresses and beddings have large doses of pesticides also.

There is a need to keep babies away from deadly petrochemicals especially when they are sleeping. One of the best ways to do this is by using organic mattresses in our baby cribs. A chemical free organic mattress is the way to go but you have to ensure that your organic mattress does not contain any of the following:
1. Toluene
2. Benzene
3. Chemicals especially petroleum based
4. Artificial vanillin
5. Fillers and Phthalates found in natural rubber cores

All these are dangerous to health, especially with continuous exposure. A manufacturer saying that their mattresses are organic is not enough. Make sure that their organic mattresses
1. Meet EU or if in the USA federal guidelines
2. Use no chemicals and only natural fibers
3. Has the wool been arsenic tested?
4. Have no poly fibers' and
5. Have an organic layer of wool quilted to organic cotton for natural flame resistance.

There are those who claim that people who are in the organic mattress business are just taking advantage of other people's fears. However, when it comes to babies' health, the risk is just too great. An organic mattress is not too big an expense to spare for the parent to be able to sleep comfortably. Knowing your child is safe from petrochemicals in non-organic mattresses is the best investment a parent can ever make.
