Hypnosis: Better than Self Help Books

By: David

I recently listened to a series of self help hypnosis cds that have opened my eyes to a lot of things regarding the control of my own thought processes. There are many misconceptions as to what hypnosis and hypnotherapy really are, due to what we have seen in movies and on stage. The assumption is that hypnosis is someone else controlling your mind, whereas in reality, all hypnosis is actually self hypnosis. Don't equate external mind control with hypnosis-- you are always in control. Hypnosis is simply distraction of the conscious level of the mind and even if we “officially” have never been hypnotized, we have all inadvertently fallen into a state of hypnosis. Have you ever been on your way to the store only to find yourself absentmindedly on the road to work? Perhaps you have become aware that you just drove a few miles without conscious awareness only to timidly peek a glance in the rear view mirror looking for flashing blue lights.

What makes hypnosis so effective (and I've learned this first hand from listening to self hypnosis cds) is that we are all susceptible to its powers. If not, there are a lot of companies wasting money on advertising designed to influence our choice of cars, clothes, and even toilet paper. Hypnotherapy is simply harnessing the power of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes. It is objective in intent rather subjective; in other words, the intent of hypnotherapy is not to have you run around and bark like a dog but to assist you in achieving your own predetermined set of goals. There are various approaches to doing this, but the common denominator is simply that our minds are like computers that do their own programming. We are, in fact, self-aware, sentient beings that can program our own brains if given the right tools.

Each of us has a conscious, unconscious, and subconscious mind. Keeping the computer theme going, think of your conscious mind as analogous to the monitor of a computer. We keystroke into our consciousness experiences and decisions which project onto the monitor of our awareness. Your conscious mind is your periscope into the world, but contrary to popular belief it has never created a thought. It controls voluntary motor skills, identifies bodily needs and monitors your senses. That is quite an important job for something that does not think; to believe it does is like believing the image on a movie screen created the movie.

The art of thinking rests in the subconscious and unconscious levels of the mind. The subconscious mind serves two very important functions. First, it is the master computer of the physical body, controlling all autonomic functions such as breathing, heartbeat, healing (ie., broken bones, cuts or bruises). Secondly, it is a vast storehouse of everything you have ever experienced, thought or dreamed. Everything--I mean everything--is stored there. Your subconscious mind is like the hard drive of your computer--it contains just the facts. It has no analytical or deductive abilities, simply an operating system and a memory capacity. That may seem like a flaw, but in reality it's an asset. The subconscious mind has no investment or attachment to physical aliments, addictions, emotional blocks or dysfunctional behaviors. As the master computer of the body, and the storehouse of vast sums of information, it is simply “mental wiring.” There is no investment, whether we're afraid of flying or if we can't quit smoking. It will support our behavior based upon the programming it receives.
