Career Builders Use These Three Strategies

By: S Harris

Many people do not build their careers effectively resulting in them having less successful lives than they could have had. Over time they will earn less and they will lose out on the opportunities that life offers us all. They go to work each day but are not building their careers. So what are three areas we can all focus on to get ahead.

The first step in becoming a career builder is to make sure that you are managing your career. Don't just drift along day by day leaving your career to chance or your manager. It doesn't work that way! Make sure that you have a plan and that you are following it. Ensure that you get the development and training that you need for your career. It's very easy for employers to defer this so make sure that it gets planned. On your way home every day review what you did. Can you identify anything that you did that day that contributes to your future?

The second step is to make sure that you have clear measurable objectives from your boss. In many environments this can be extremely difficult in practice, but this is a key area which you can use to build and enhance your career.

If qualitative measures are hard to define then make sure that everyone focuses on the deadline set. Then your aim is to build a reputation as someone who delivers on time. This is a key way that you can differentiate yourself from your colleagues and can become a major positive factor in your career.

However, if you are going to build a career by hitting deadlines make sure it's realistic. Your boss will normally be pushing hard but if you don't assert yourself you could be setting yourself to fail. If you do the work well but it's delivered late then this can be the thing everyone remembers. Negotiate the deadline up front. Don't try to renegotiate later when you're about to miss the deadline. Become flexible in your negotiations if you're too busy. Ask what can be deferred and get it agreed. Ask about delegating some of your other work or getting support to get the job done.

The third step is to compare the work place to the world of sport. The key lesson is that the difference between the players and teams at the top is very small. Therefore, for you to win and get the promotion all it takes is for you to be a tiny bit better than your opponent. Identify what areas you need to be better in and concentrate on being better than your colleagues.

To conclude, if you want to be a career builder and not just a worker many people lose sight of their goal in the middle of all the everyday tasks. Rather, they need to ensure that each day supports them in some way towards their longer term career goals. Secondly, they can build a career as someone who delivers by the deadline. Finally, make sure you are better at the things that matter than your colleagues who will be challenging you for any promotion opportunities.
