A Nanny Background Check Is As Important As Your Childs Life

By: Matt A. Thomas

Selecting who should be a nanny for your children can be a painstaking process. You want to take great care in choosing who is going to be watching over your child's safety when you can't take care of them yourself. Finding out the history of your prospective nanny is imperative.

When selecting a nanny, it's vitally important that you perform an interview with the candidate to see of you're comfortable with their up-front answers. If the interview goes well, then it's time to get a detailed nanny background check to assure yourself that the candidate was telling you the whole truth and ignoring other areas that may have made them a risk to your child.

Make sure you include the following questions that you may ask your prospective nanny:

* Why do you want to be a nanny?

* What part of taking care of children makes you want this job?

* What caused you to look for new employment?

* What make you discipline a child and what sort of punishment do you hand out?

* How do you differ from others in making sure my kids get good mental growth?

* My child's physical development is important to me. Is there anything you would do differently than other candidates for this position?

* What do you do to promote learning?

* What is your background with respect to having my kids learn music and art from you?

* Do you have experience playing outside as well as inside?

* What are some of your favorite activities?

* How do you handle a kids that's throwing a fit for no justifiable reason?

Before doing a formal nanny background check, make sure that your nanny applicant knows that you plan on searching his or her background. This should not be a surprise and any potential nanny that gives you problems or refuses to submit to a background check is most likely a nanny applicant who should be passed over.

Make sure you get your nanny job applicant to complete a routine job application. This should include how to contact them, where they've lived in the past, where they've worked and any people that would provide them a job reference.

As a routine matter, look over the application and make sure it is completely filled out. Check to make sure they've included their birthday, where they were born, SSN and drivers license number. Call all the references and, if you can't reach them, ask for a different one to replace the one you couldn't verify.

Have your prospective nanny sign a consent form and provide a copy of their photo id.

A good nanny background check should include:

Identity Verification: Make sure that the nanny's social security and drivers' license number really belongs to him or her.

DMV Records: Checking the applicant's driving record might seem mundane. After all, just because he or she got a lot of speeding tickets does not mean that he or she would be a bad nanny. What you want to look for are records of drunk or reckless driving. DMV records can also include accident reports if there are any - including accidents in which the applicant was a victim.

Financial Records: A basic credit check will let you know how responsible your nanny will be with the paycheck he or she will earn. You can learn if he or she pays the bills on time and this check will also reveal years worth of previous addresses and employers.

Criminal Records: A criminal record check is imperative to the safety of your kids. You might be surprised to find criminal activity that you can't live with - including that of being a convicted sex offender.

It's always better to be safe than sorry when checking out your nanny's background. You want to make sure that your kids are in the safe hands of a trusted individual. A qualified nanny understand this and has no issue with you checking them out to assure the child's safety.
