A Checklist for Printed Catalogs

By: Andrew Michaels

"Many companies continue to use printed catalogs in their business. Although online catalogs are prevalent in today's digital world, printed ones are still necessary. There are many people who are still not connected to the Internet and many more who simply do not like shopping online. Often, customers like the open canvas experience of a catalog that they can hold in their hands. They like flipping the pages and being able to see the entire spread at once.

When putting together the materials for catalog printing, use the following checklist to make sure that you don't forget anything important.
• Choose the products to be included in your catalog, and remember to assign item numbers and prices to each one.
• Gather the individual photographs for the items. Only use group photos for those items that are sold as a group.
• Write descriptions for each item. Be sure to keep your words to a minimum as no one wants to take the time to read a lengthy paragraph when shopping.
• Create an order form that is easy to understand and complete. Include your address and space for a stamp and return address so that customers do not need to provide an envelope.
• Choose the font types you want to use. Stick to 2 or 3 font faces so as not to overwhelm the reader with too much.
• Pick colors that correspond with your company image. As with fonts, use only 2 or 3 colors.
• Choose a format that will work best with your purpose. Sizes and paper stock are both a part of your presentation; therefore, choose what will go best with the topic of your catalog.
• Create a dynamic front cover. Be careful not to clutter it with too much information, but instead include photographs and a headline that are visually appealing and captivating.
• Design the back cover. Since many customers often look at the back cover before choosing to open the catalog, you may also want to include some popular or discounted items.
• Layout the photographs and texts grouping like items together. Place the most appealing products in the corners as this is where customers look 1st when flipping the pages.
• Decide on your method of mailing. You may want to use your own mailing list or you may want to purchase one. You also might want to use the mailing services provided by your catalog printing company.
• The last step requires sending your project to a printer. Since different printing companies have different requirements, contact yours to find out the best way to submit your catalog.
